Technology as a Catalyst to Transforming Nursing Care

Although technology alone cannot resolve the many underlying causes of the nursing shortage, it is an increasingly important factor in transforming the patient care process and improving the work environment and job satisfaction of registered nurses.

Given the growing demand for nurses, there is no question that optimizing the performance and efficient use of scarce human resources has become an imperative for the health care industry. In addition, recent public and industry concern for patient safety has motivated the development of technology solutions designed to improve care processes, enhance interdisciplinary communication, and reduce medical errors. In the future, it also will be necessary to find technology solutions that respond to the changing needs of patient populations and the patient care workforce, all of whom are aging.
