A holistic nurse is involved in all areas of wellness and holistic [treating of the whole person rather than just the disease; the mind, body and spirit] healing.
Preparation roles for the holistic nurse include massage therapist, acupuncturist, educator, trainer and general holistic nurse. A holistic nurse must be committed to the holistic philosophy and open to treatments outside of conventional medicine.
A holistic nurse focuses on wellness, healing and preventive medicine from a spiritual and more natural perspective. Holistic nurses have the opportunity to be part of a growing field, with potential for professional, personal and spiritual growth. There are some drawbacks: The field is relatively new, so open positions are limited. Holistic nurses and other practitioners also must deal with skepticism from other professionals in health care.
Educational requirements include: Certification and/or licensure may be required, but it varies from state to state. Holistic nursing certification is available from the American Holistic Nurse Association. Continuous self-education in holistic practices and principles is a necessity.
Holistic nurses are employed by health care facilities, holistic health centers, health clubs, resorts and spas, in private practice, pain treatment centers and physicians' offices.
