A nurse outreach educator serves in hospitals, clinics, social services offices, educational institutions or at non-profit organizations. This position conducts seminars, classes and counseling sessions and serves as an advocate for social/health issues.
Nurse outreach educators must be focused and well organized, communicate well in groups or one-on-one, understand the social and health implications of health issues and personal behavior, serve in a counselor/advisor role and recommend/implement solutions to societal health problems. Must also be adept at public speaking and have strong writing skills.
Experience in a health care facility is helpful but not required. A nurse outreach educator should hold a bachelor's degree/RN and have experience working in social services or education.
Employment opportunities exist with school districts, state/county social agencies, healthcare facilities and health care organizations. Many outreach positions are grant/government funded.
