Dec. 21, 2009 - Three major nursing organizations have come together to launch a campaign to have 2010 designated as the International Year of the Nurse. Sigma Theta Tau International, the Nightingale Initiative for Global Health (NIGH), and the Florence Nightingale Museum (FNM) in London have created a public awareness initiative called 2010 IYNurse.
According to its supporters, 2010 IYNurse seeks to recognize the contributions of nurses globally and to engage nurses in the promotion of world health, including the UN MDGs. In collaboration with other global citizens, nurses will demonstrate - throughout 2010 IYNurse - how nurses advocate for the achievement of these goals globally.
They note that the effort is designed to also honor the legacy of Florence Nightingale and other nurses, midwives and healthcare workers of the past and present, who have shown how personal actions can make a world of difference.
2010 IYNurse is a “Celebration of Commitment” creating opportunities for nurses to showcase their unique contributions toward the achievement of health and well-being for everyone. All events, celebrations and activities for 2010 IYNurse are intended to be inclusive and collaborative.
There will be a kickoff event for the 2010IYNurse. The organizers are inviting the public to join them for a Celebration of Caring as part of The Million Nurse Global Caring Field Project on January 1, 2010 from 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in the J. Paul Sticht Center Auditorium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
