Boulder Creek, California was once known as a bustling logging town and railway stop, and now it’s home to a writer and nurse who is making a name for herself in fantasy and science fiction circles.

Registered nurse Erin Cashier has already been published or is scheduled for publication in five professional magazines or anthologies less than one year after winning first place in the 24th annual L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest for new and aspiring writers worldwide.

This July, Erin's work will appear in the 2009 Footprints science fiction anthology (Hadley Rille Books) and in fall her stories will appear in the Morrigan Ezine (Three Crow Press) and Polluto Magazine #6.

"Winning the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest is excellent to put on cover letters to editors," Erin said in describing her recent success. "It is a huge feather in your cap."
In addition to her first professional publication and a contest cash award last year, Erin also took part in a week-long workshop sponsored by the Contest and led by members of the jury panel of award-winning and best-selling writers.

"Erin really took the intensive mentoring process to heart," said Contest Director Joni Labaqui. "Her continuing success is the reason that Mr. Hubbard started the contest in 1983 to give unrecognized talent a better chance to make it in publishing."

When she's not busy writing, Erin works at a Bay Area burn ward.

Past winners of the Writers Contest and its companion Illustrators of the Future Contest have had over 500 novels, 1,400 short stories and tens of thousands of illustrations published with an estimated 31 million books sold. The Contests were initiated by L. Ron Hubbard in 1983 shortly after returning to the field of science fiction with his bestseller Battlefield Earth.
