AACN

Kathleen
A. Long, RN, Ph.D., was elected to serve a two-year term as the next president
of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.
Long, who
is dean of the University of Florida School of Nursing, assumed her new position
last week at the AACN annual meeting in Washington, D.C. She replaces Carolyn
Williams, dean of the University of Kentucky School of Nursing.
Long has
served as a faculty member and administrator at Johns Hopkins University, the
University of Maryland, Husson College and Montana State University. From
1990-1995, she was the dean at the Montana State University College of Nursing.
Long has
also served on the U.S. Office of Rural Health Policy’s advisory board and the
Advisory Group of Deans of Schools of Nursing, which gave input to President
Bill Clinton’s Task Force on National Health Care Reform.
In
addition to Long, two new members were elected to the AACN’s Board of
Directors. Dorothy Powell, RN, Ed.D., associate dean for nursing at Howard
University’s College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, was
elected to serve as the board’s secretary. Roberta Olson, currently the dean
and a professor at the College of Nursing at South Dakota State University, will
be the board’s newest member-at-large.
Cynthia
Flynn Capters, RN, Ph.D., dean of the University of Akron College of Nursing,
was reelected for a second term on the board, as was Mary Mundt, RN, Ph.D., dean
of the University of Louisville School of Nursing.
